This month we had the opportunity to discuss employment with Mike Owens, HR Manager at Mackay Mitchell Envelope Company.

What do you like about your job?

The opportunity to help people, while at the same time helping the business succeed.

What are you looking for when you read a job application, cover letter, or resume? 

Completeness and work history

What is the most common mistake you’ve seen made in job interviews?

Believe it or not people who say too much.

How long does the “average” hiring process take from application to start date?

We do mostly temporary to permanent hiring and not counting the 90 day probationary period, it takes less than a week.

Will you hire people with a criminal background?  If so, do you have advice for someone with a criminal background to be hired?

Yes, there are certain felonies that will render an applicant ineligible however honesty is the best policy.

Do you have any recommendations for someone with a short work history or a work history with large gaps?

An honest reason for those gaps.

Is there anything about the hiring process you’d like to mention that hasn’t been asked?

How a person presents themselves goes along way. This includes dress attire and we use a paper application in which neatness goes along way as well.
